On Wednesday 8 May, our Level 2 Biology students went on a field trip to the Devonport rocky shore as part of their NCEA internal assessment for AS91158 (Investigate a pattern in an ecological community), valued at 4 credits.
During the excursion, students investigated ecological patterns along the rocky shore, with a focus on zonation as a significant distribution pattern of organisms. Utilizing transects and quadrats, they collected ecological data and engaged thoroughly in the fieldwork, demonstrating commendable ownership and agency in their learning process.
Following the scientific investigation, we visited the Navy Museum where students were afforded the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by New Zealand soldiers during the Second World War. This experience provided a meaningful and enriching extension beyond the classroom environment.
I was particularly impressed by the exemplary behaviour and positive attitude exhibited by our students throughout the day. They displayed initiative, collaborated effectively and represented our school with distinction.
It was gratifying to observe them consistently embody our school’s four core values: Respect, Resilience, Responsibility and Relationships within an environment that fostered deep learning, teamwork and appreciation of our shared history and natural surroundings.
